Today I dive into a two month writing sabbatical t

Today I dive into a two month writing sabbatical to finish my #nextbook; an exploration of how race broke the world and how to fix it, viewed through the lens of my family story, which stretches back to at least 1682 (Maryland).

I am excited, scared to death, feeling inadequate, feeling over prepared with 30 years of research and two chapters written—and yet...feeling queezy...

I will continue our Tuesday night #verygoodgospel #bookclub and our Friday night #kitchentableconvos on #iglive . Other than that and a few other priorities, my attention will be turned to my ancestors—my family—and what they have to say about our nation.

I will let their lives speak to my mind, body and soul.

I wonder now what my Great Aunt Martha (top right) will say? Why did she throw herself out of that 3rd story window in South Philly.

What, exactly made Great Grandmom Lizzy (center) leave South Carolina and join the Great Migration? And what was it like for my Grandmom Willa (next to Lizzy) to be left behind— because she was too dark?

And what will Great Grandpop Hiram (bottom left) tell us about his father, Henry, who fought in the Civil War with three brothers, and his mother Harriet, who we believe escaped the Cherokee Trail of Tears.

What twisted tales within our national narrative will their stories reveal? What will those insights reveal about us now? How we got here? And how we fix it?

The FULL TEXT of my sermon, "The 5th of July" offered on FBLive, July 5, 2020 in coordination with the Poor People's Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival and Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference.

“There is a disruptive question beyond the ritual, beyond the traditional narrative: But what is the truth? When a genocidal slavocracy establishes a holiday that celebrates freedom, narrative is doing dirty work.

Here is the truth.

America thinks of itself in biblical terms. We are the City on a Hill (Matthew 5:14). We are the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21). We are the New Promised Land (Joshua 1:13). Its founders imagined themselves, Christians and deists, to be the adopted recipients of the promise to Abraham’s seed—to make them a great nation. From 1660 through the 1740s a series of Colonial race laws established white supremacy in every British colony. Thus, the American promise was not ours.

Four founding documents ensured the elevation and protected status of white men as full Americans and all else to some situation beneath their boots...”
