Information and Guidelines for Event Hosts

Thank you for your interest in inviting Lisa Sharon Harper to serve as a speaker for your upcoming event. The ministries of speaking, teaching, training, organizing, and public witness are core to Ms. Harper’s work and vocation. She is grateful for opportunities to carry out this work in service to your community. Please review this information carefully before submitting the Speaking Engagement Form. Thank you, again, for your interest!

*At this time, Lisa Sharon Harper is only available for virtual events until further notice.

Honorarium and Expenses

As event hosts, you agree to provide an honorarium and cover costs associated with Ms. Harper’s travel to and from your event.

Ms. Harper is particularly sensitive to the needs of nonprofit organizations and those with limited funds. Inability to pay the established honorarium should not discourage you from completing the application. We are committed to reviewing each request on a case by case basis and working with you on ideas and alternative resources. Our experience has shown that seeking collaborative co-sponsors to share the costs and responsibilities of an event can be a helpful approach. If the honorarium presents a significant hardship for your organization, then we ask that you please detail this information on the Speaking Engagement Form.

All honoraria should be made payable to Freedom Road LLC. and provided to Ms. Harper on the day of the event.

Travel costs covered, booked, and reimbursed by the host include:

  • Round-trip coach airfare (reservations made by the host)
  • Ground transportation (to and from airport/event)
  • Hotel accommodations
  • Meals throughout the duration of the event and travel days
  • Travel expenses (flights, hotel, ground transportation, meals) for a companion to assist Lisa

Accommodations

Event hosts are responsible for securing hotel accommodations for the speaker using direct billing to your organization. For security purposes, hotel accommodations should be on the 3rd floor (or higher) with no outdoor facing exit/entrance to the room. Accommodations should include a comfortable and quiet room, with high-speed internet capability (enabling Ms. Harper to perform necessary work away from the office), restaurant, and if possible an exercise facility.

Transportation

Event hosts are responsible to make all flight arrangements using direct billing to your organization, using United Airlines whenever possible. Event hosts are also responsible for arranging a representative to meet the speaker at the airport and take him/her to the hotel and to and from related events during the stay. Alternatively, Lisa may use a taxi and submit the expense for reimbursement.

Outreach and Publicity

Local outreach is very important for the success of your event. We encourage as many leaders as possible from the local community to participate in the speaking event. This helps to boost outreach efforts. We also ask that our hosts actively and broadly publicize the event. This promotion may include: email blasts, passing out flyers at local gatherings, placing ads or announcements in local newspapers, publicizing the event through social media (Facebook, Twitter, Eventbrite), and spreading the word through personal and community-based blogs. It is always a great idea to include other local organizations and churches in the planning process of your event as co-sponsors. This helps build a diverse audience while also multiplying your audience.

Ms. Harper will promote your event on her website and through social media.

Press & Media

Event hosts agree to help with attendance by contacting area churches, social and civic organizations, the media, colleges, and universities, and the general public. If a media outlet in your area is interested in interviewing Ms. Harper, please have this outlet email us at info@freedomroad.us.

Book Sales

Book sales are an important way Ms. Harper’s message can continue to strengthen and edify her audiences beyond her time with them. As host, you agree to purchase and arrange for Ms. Harper’s latest book to be sold at your event. We ask that you arrange for a local bookstore to manage book sales. Alternatively, you may order books directly from the publisher or from an online vendor. In either of these cases, you will need to arrange for volunteers to manage book sales onsite.

Hello LSH Community! Over the past week 2,000 of y Hello LSH Community! Over the past week 2,000 of you decided to click and join the stream of movement flowing through this corner of the Insta-sphere. Thank you! I honor you and welcome you. I’d like to introduce myself and let you know what you can expect on Freedom Road.

Freedom Road exists at the intersections of faith, race, gender, economic and environmental justice. The LSH community, along with @FreedomRoad.us, believes that story has the power to both keep us apart and to bring us together, so our work bridges the gap between our stories. We believe in the inherent dignity of all, so we tolerate no inequity—none. We are people of faith, people trying to understand faith, and people burned by faith all leaning in, because our souls sense that something more is possible.

I met Jesus in the context of white evangelical faith, the same year the Moral Majority was founded. Yet, I’ve spent the last 30 years on pilgrimage through lands where evil has reared its head in our world and people of faith have confronted it. From LA ’92, Ferguson and Baltimore to Charlottesville, South Africa, Brazil, Ireland and Australia, I’ve found one common denominator: Evil manifests in the form of systems, structures, laws and policies that secure the flourishing of some, while pushing the faces of others into the ground.

I have 30 years of anti-racism training experience and 15 years of experience as a faith-community organizer first in NYC, then in DC with @sojogram .

In 2017, I launched @FreedomRoad.us. We consult, coach, train, develop forums and design transformational pilgrimage experiences. In 2020, we launched the Freedom Road Institute for Leadership and Justice to equip individuals to build a better world.

Throughout the week, we will ask better questions. I will share resources. We will come together for our #kitchentableconvo every Friday, 7pm ET. And my approach will de-center white worldview and sensibilities. My first concern is not white people’s comfort. My first concern is what is just—what does physically brown, politically black Jesus have to say to us about our world today?

Welcome to the journey! #lshcommunity

400,000
by @lisasharper

400,000 souls
who lived
and breathed
and dreamed
and longed for peace
and worked for peace
and struggled with their own brokenness
and played
and cried
and were loved
and loved...

They were with us
One year ago.
400,000 images of God.

We love you.
We acknowledge you.
We thank you.

You passed from our writhing world—unprepared. No goodbye. No “affairs in order”.

So, today at 5:30pm ET we will all stop.
We will face you.
We will see you.
We will weep with you.
And we will release you
Into the next phase of life;
Shrouded behind the veil called death.

But you are not dead.
Your soul does not die.
You live in our memories;
In what you taught us
In how you touched us.

Walk forward, dear ones
Be received by Love
S/he is waiting for you.

There was that time we prayerfully held a #StopExecutions banner outside SCOTUS... & spent 2 ... days in jail, faced a maximum fine of $90,000 & 60 days in prison... for holding a banner.
